A dog whose damaged eyesight could not be saved by surgery needs a new home.

Keela was surrendered to the B.C. SPCA’s North Cariboo animal centre in Prince George by her owner, who could no longer afford veterinary care.

“She is a very friendly, social dog,” said Jamey Blair, the B.C. SPCA’s senior manager for the interior north region of B.C., in a press release. “Even when Keela arrived at the animal centre in pain and blind, she responded so well to everyone she met."

The seven-year-old husky-border collie mix had extremely red, painful, inflamed eyes, which left her without vision.

“Her eyes were difficult to look at,” said Blair. “They were so red and swollen. It was clear she was in a great deal of discomfort and was unable to see.”

Blair said Keela’s nose was rubbed raw, she had overgrown nails, and her teeth and mouth were not in good shape, and noted that it was obvious she had not received medical care for some time.

Keela was immediately brought to a veterinary clinic where, after an examination, it was determined that the inflammation was caused by high pressure and could not be managed with medication or repaired through surgery. The dog's eyes would have to be removed.

Keela recovered quickly after having her eyes removed. She is scheduled for her dental examination to determine if she needs oral surgery.
