A spate of lightning strikes in the past two weeks has resulted in no less than two dozen new wildfires of all sizes cropping up in the Prince George Fire Centre.
Although not wildfires of note, they are being monitored by the B.C. Wildfire Service.
The two largest in the Peace Region – the Folded Hill Creek fire west of Hudson’s Hope, and the Hasler Flats blaze, southwest of Chetwynd, continue to burn out of control.
At last report, flames from the Folded Hill Creek wildfire had charred close to 450 hectares, or 4.5 square kilometres; more than 150 hectares has burned near Hasler Flats.
A cluster of nine smaller fires is also burning about 30 kilometres southeast of the Pine Pass – the largest, at two hectares.
Two others in the northeast corner of the region, the Dall Lake fire (150 hectares) and an unnamed blaze north of Coal River (1100 hectares) are being held.
All four of the larger fires are being linked to lightning strikes and are not threatening any homes or property.
As another weekend nears, back country users are again being urged to be vigilant.
That includes removing grass and debris from exhaust pipes and engines on all-terrain vehicles when in the forest.
And, although temperatures are expected to drop slightly this weekend, the forecast is for only a chance of showers, meaning continued dry conditions.
The fire danger rating, as of Wednesday, remains at high to extreme for the entire northeast.
