One local playwright will see his or her work spotlighted on the professional stage after developing the project in Theatre North West's TrueNorth New Works program.

The project is ultimately to celebrate the City of Prince George's 100th anniversary in 2015 and the project will take time to develop.

The first phase of the new project is a call for submissions of one-act plays with local subject matter being true, and historical or contemporary in nature. Deadline is Dec. 15.

Winners will be announced in January 2014.

In February 2014, play development will take place featuring a three-day workshop with professional actors with the two winning playwrights.

Production of one play will take place as the opener for Theatre North West's presentation in February 2015 during the Canada Winter Games.

Not only is 2015 the city's centennial and the year the winter games will be in Prince George, it's also Theatre North West's 20th season and in honour of the occasion, the Prince George Citizen, who has sponsored every season of professional theatre, will also be partnering in this new project.

The stories that capture the spirit of Northern B.C.'s rugged region can finally be told in a unique way, through a playwright's eyes, and the best way to showcase a story is to present it to a national audience during the games.

Rules for the first phase of the project include:

Playwright must be a resident of Prince George;

Stories must be true and local;

Stories can be historical or contemporary;

Stories can be intimate in nature or examining larger subjects and scopes;

Work must be one act, 10 to 15 minutes in length;

Maximum of four actors, two male, two female;

Submission deadline is December 15, 2013.

Playwrights are asked to explore true Northern BC events.

To submit, email a script and cover letter, with the subject line TrueNorth New Works Submission to [email protected].
