A costly prank

Two teenagers in Campbell River got themselves into a barrel of trouble when they pulled a prank that turned out to be costly.

The male youths, aged 17 and 18, propped up a garbage can filled with water against the front door of a residence and when the occupants answered the door, about 100 liters of water poured into the home.

"The water quickly spread to the sunken living room and into the dining room on the hardwood floors. In addition, the water seeped downstairs and was seen dripping out of the ceiling pot lights," said RCMP Cpl. Jim Baker.

An inspection of the residence by a local restoration company determined major repairs are anticipated, and although exact cost of repairs is yet to be determined, the owners expect the total bill could run in excess of $20,000. The work will also interrupt the family's use of the residence for 10 to 14 days while repairs are completed.

Baker says in his 33-year career in the RCMP, he has never seen a prank that resulted in such destruction of property and disruption of a family's home. He describes actions like this as "senseless" and "totally uncalled for."

The youth were apprehended and released pending further investigation and consideration of criminal charges.
