A man was arrested in Prince George this afternoon (July 29) after failing to stop for police when he was caught using a cellphone.
Cpl. Craig Douglass says the RCMP Traffic Services Section was conducting enhanced distracted-driving enforcement in the downtown area.
At roughly 1:20 p.m., an officer saw a man using his cellphone while driving. The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop near Sixth Avenue and Victoria Street.
The man did not stop for police and fled the area in the vehicle. In the interest of public safety, the officer decided not to pursue the driver and numerous officers were called as backup to find him and the vehicle.
Douglass says a short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned on Brunswick Street.
Police found the suspect around 1:40 p.m. near Seventh Avenue and Victoria Street.
The 20-year-old man was taken to the detachment for processing and released with documents to appear in court at a later date while pending charges assessment from the BC Prosecution Service.
The investigation of flight from police and dangerous operation of a vehicle is ongoing.
