A North Vancouver bank robber ran into lots of trouble this week when he tried to get away on foot after robbing the Bank of Montreal on Esplanade Street.
Two bank employees chased Gabriel Williams as he fled on foot, and when he got into a taxi near Lonsdale Quay, the two employees, with the help of the taxi driver who got into the fray, held Williams down until police arrived. Nobody was injured and the bank recovered its money.
Investigators believe Williams is responsible for a number of recent robberies in the Vancouver area and have recommended a total of five robbery charges be laid against him. He is charged with an additional robbery at the Bank of Montreal Jan. 13 and three more in Vancouver between Dec. 31 and Jan. 8. He is being held in custody
Although police commend the bravery shown by these conscientious citizens, they remind people that such actions pose a significant risk to the public, especially if weapons become involved.
