Cirque du Soleil is temporarily suspending 13 shows across the world as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
This includes its AXEL program that was scheduled to perform in Prince George June 25 to 28 this summer at the CN Centre.
“From the very beginning of the new coronavirus outbreak, [Cirque du Soleil] took rigorous measures to protect its work teams and the public,” reads a release sent out today (March 13).
“Our priority has always been, and remains, the health and safety of our artists, our partners, our employees and our audiences.”
AXEL was set to be the second show the internationally-renowned acrobatic troupe would’ve brought to Prince George in two years following its CRYSTAL performance in 2018.
That show sold more than 17,000 tickets sold to local and regional residents.
According to CN Centre Manager Glen Mikkelsen, anyone who purchased a ticket for AXEL will receive refunds from the original point of purchase after Monday, March 30.
He adds if tickets were purchased via TicketsNorth, refunds will be processed automatically.
Despite no reported cases in Northern Health’s region, Cirque du Soleil’s show is now one of several cancelled or suspended from the CN Centre due to spreading concerns of COVID-19.
This includes the 2020 World Women’s Curling Championships and Alice Cooper’s Prince George stop on his North American tour.
AXEL was poised to tell the story of a young graphic artist and rock musician going deep into his own hand-drawn universe while experiencing love, courage and perseverance.
The show features freestyle ice-skating, stunts, acrobatics and musical entertainment.
