B.C. adds 15 new COVID-19 deaths, Northern Health surpasses 3,000 recorded cases

COVID-19 numbers continue to rise in northern B.C.

In a written statement this afternoon (Jan. 21), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 564 new cases discovered in the past day in B.C., which brings the total to 62,976. 

Of those, Northern Health recorded 76 more infections for an updated authority total of 3,054. 

Health officials also announced 15 more people in B.C. have died from the virus, which brings the fatality rate to 1,119.

There are 4,450 people listed as active for COVID-19 throughout the province, 309 of whom are in hospital with 68 in critical care.

A total of 56,010 have been classified as fully recovered.

Henry also says there have been 104,901 vaccines administered in B.C. to date with 1,680 of those being second doses.

According to the latest weekly map of confirmed COVID-19 cases in communities released by the BCCDC yesterday, Prince George recorded 76 cases within the Prince George Local Health Area.  This is an average daily rate of 10 to 15 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 10 to 16. 

The numbers are down from last week when the BCCDC announced 108 cases from Jan. 3 to Jan. 9.

The number of cases has increased in Fort Nelson from 31 to 40. 

Quesnel remains at 4 cases while, Burns Lake has 33, Peace River South has 8, Peace River North has 37, Nechako 31, Smithers 32.

Tomorrow (Jan. 22), health officials are scheduled to give an update on B.C.'s COVID-19 immunization plan at 10:30 a.m.

The announcement will include Premier John Horgan and Dr. Penny Ballem, who is leading B.C.'s COVID-19 immunization rollout, and Dr. Bonnie Henry.
