A calmer weekend in terms of new COVID-19 cases, but in more disturbing news, B.C. has now passed a large number for deaths.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 22 more people that passed away from the virus since Friday (Jan. 8), eclipsing the total to more than 1,000 deaths to 1,010.

According to B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix says five of those deaths were recorded in Northern Health, bringing its to-date total to 42.

Northern Health confirms two of which were out of the Jubliee Lodge long-term care home outbreak in Prince George.

This comes among 1,475 new infections detected, for a grand total of 58,107, 173 of which were found in Northern Health as the region surpasses another significant milestone to 2,560 cases since March.

The latest three-day case counts are as follows:

  • 538 = Friday to Saturday
    • 11 deaths
  • 507 = Saturday to Sunday
    • Six deaths
  • 430 = Sunday to Monday
    • Five deaths

Of the 5,220 active cases in B.C., plus an undetermined number in Northern Health due to a technical error and system switch, 72 people are admitted into critical care or ICU among 358 total hospitalizations.

There are 7,313 people under active public-health monitoring after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, and 50,541 people have recovered since the province's first case found in January last year.

There are currently four other outbreaks on Northern Health's watch.

As of this publication, 12 people have died and 60 lab-confirmed cases are in Prince George's Jubilee Lodge with the long-term care home seeing 48 residents infected and 12 staff members.

Two COVID-19 outbreaks are in University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC), including the Internal Medicine Unit where one person has died among 21 total infections, broken down to 10 patients and 11 staff members.

The other is in the Rehabilitation Unit where one case has been detected since Jan. 5.

At Coastal GasLink's work accommodation sites in Burns Lake and the Nechako region, there are no active cases among 56 cases discovered to date involving the 7 Mile and Little Rock Lake lodges.

Two more members of School District 57 (SD57) have been marked for COVID-19 coming the days immediately following the winter break, according to Northern Health.

Students and staff at DP Todd Secondary in Prince George may have been exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus between Jan. 4 and 6, while those at Valemount Secondary may have come into contact on Jan. 6.

The B.C. government has been criticized for what some consider a slow roll-out of vaccines

Vaccinations have been ramping up, however, with 13,643 people vaccinated on the weekend, up until yesterday (Jan. 10).

That brings the total number of people vaccinated, up until yesterday, to 59,902.

The province has so far received 71,200 doses of vaccine, with most of those doses being the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Provincial health officer Bonnie Henry said she expected that health officials will use all of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that they have on hand by the end of the day, but that more doses are likely to arrive as soon as tomorrow (Jan. 12).
