B.C. records 12 new COVID-19 deaths, Northern Health adds 32 cases

The north continues its struggle with COVID-19.

In a written statement this afternoon (Jan. 19), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 465 new cases discovered in the past day, which brings the provincial total to 61,912. 

Of those, Northern Health recorded 32 for an updated authority total of 2,943. 

There are 6,864 people listed as active for COVID-19 throughout the province, 329 of whom are in hospital with 70 in critical care.

A total of 55,099 have been classified as fully recovered.

Health officials announced there have been 12 additional recorded deaths in the province, which brings the fatality rate to 1,090. 

Northern Health revealed this morning there have been another two deaths in an ongoing outbreak involving the Internal Medicine Unit (IMU) at UHNBC in Prince George. 

The death toll is now three with the outbreak originally being declared on Dec. 29, 2020, after six cases were discovered involving two patients and four staff members. 

In a Jan. 5, 2021 update, there was a total of 21 cases in the unit with 10 patients and 11 staff testing positive, along with the first fatality. 

"Northern Health public health recommends any recently-discharged clients self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms, and to seek testing if symptoms develop," a statement released the same day. 

In the latest update last week on Jan. 13, it was announced there have now been a total of 31 positive cases which was broken down among 19 patients and 12 staff. 

Northern Health says there have been no new cases or deaths amid another outbreak at the Jubilee Lodge in Prince George. 

The outbreak, declared on Dec. 12, 2020, spread rapidly and has involved 61 positive cases including 48 residents and 13 staff. 

Sadly, 14 people have died at the long-term care facility. 

Another outbreak declared at the Rehab Unit in UHNBC remains at three positive cases discovered with no deaths associated. 

It was also announced yesterday that DP Todd Secondary has been listed a second time in as many weeks for a COVID-19 exposure event with Northern Health citing Jan. 11 and 12 as the dates.

Students and staff at the SD57 member may have also potentially come into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus between Jan. 4 and 6.
