B.C. records 16 additional COVID-19 deaths, Northern Health sees 34 new cases

COVID-19 continues to cause tragedy in B.C.

In a written statement this afternoon (Feb. 3), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said another 414 COVID-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours for a grand total of 68,789 since January last year. 

Of those, Northern Health found 34 more infections for an updated authority total of 3,558.

B.C. officials announced 16 more virus-linked deaths, which brings the fatality rate to 1,234.

There are 4,426 people listed as active for COVID-19 in the province, 278 of whom are in hospital with 80 in critical care or ICU. A total of 61,643 have fully recovered.

Amid ongoing outbreaks, Northern Health revealed tragic news yesterday (Feb. 2). 

In a statement, the authority said two more deaths took place at Jubilee Lodge in Prince George, which raises the death toll to 16. 

No new cases have been detected at the long-term care home; a total of 62 cases among 48 residents and 14 staff members remains since Jan. 13. 

The outbreak was originally declared at the facility on Dec. 12, 2020. 

Additionally, a ninth death has taken place involving the ongoing outbreak at University Hospital of Northern BC's (UHNBC) Internal Medicine Unit. 

In an update on Jan. 25, Northern Health said the death toll had risen to eight since the outbreak was formally declared on Dec. 29. 

As of today, there have been 33 cases detected in the unit among 21 patients and 12 staff.

Since March 27, 2020, passengers seated near a case of COVID-19 that was recognized after arrival are no longer being directly notified of their potential exposure, but are asked to check online and monitor their symptoms.
