Two rivers that roll through Prince George’s regional area are now on high alert by the province’s River Forecast Centre.

The Nazko and West Road Rivers have been upgraded to a flood warning each as temperatures continue to rise and the snow continues to melt from higher elevations.

This comes a day after the two rivers, located south of the city, and others Fraser, Plateau, Cariboo and Chilcotin regions were put on flood watch, including:

  • Chilako
  • Quesnel
  • Williams Lake
  • Alexis Creek
  • Anahim Lake
  • Cache Creek

Some of these tributaries have already been said to see high flows in smaller sections.

“Snowmelt has begun across the region over the past few days, with reports that the rapid transition in temperatures may be playing a factor in increased overland flow due to frozen ground conditions and ice-jamming,” reads Sunday’s (April 19) update from the B.C. River Forecast Centre.

Yesterday, the mercury went up as high as 21 C in Prince George and is expected to stay between 12 and 16 C this week according to Environment Canada.

The province advises residents to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and unstable riverbanks during this time.
