Hockey is in the air!
For the Prince George Spruce Kings, the first regular-season game of the new B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) season is just over two weeks away, but they need to solidify their roster first.
The junior ‘A’ club is hosting its main training camp this weekend at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA), in which the public is welcome to attend and watch.
With the departure of Fred Page and Doyle Cup-winning head coach Adam Maglio to the Western Hockey League (WHL), Alex Evin will look to put together a team capable of matching last year’s historic run for the community-owned franchise.
The Spruce Kings also recently hired Jessie Leung as Evin’s assistant and Nick Drazenovic as the team’s skills and development coach, who are also expected to help with training camp.
Returning players and new prospects will be split into two teams hit the ice on the following schedule:
- Friday, Aug. 23 = 7 to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, Aug. 24 = 6 to 7:15 p.m.
- Sunday, Aug. 25 = 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Two days after camp, the ‘Kings will play home-and-home against the Merritt Centennials.
Prince George will host the first of the two-game exhibition series Tuesday, Aug. 27 at the RMCA.
The 2019-20 season will begin on home ice Friday, Sept, 6 against the Surrey Eagles.
The Spruce Kings will also celebrate their accomplishments from last year and raise championship banners prior to the 7 p.m. puck-drop.
