Two Prince George schools were crowned regional champions during this past weekend’s North Central Zone AA volleyball championships.
The College Heights senior boys and Kelly Road senior girls teams each won their tournament and both claiming the title for a second straight season and are off to their respective provincials later this month.
For the boys, the Cougars only gave up one set during the two-day event hosted by D.P. todd Secondary en route to the final, when they ultimately swept Duchess Park 26-24, 25-9 and 25-19 in the best-of-five match.
They did the same damage as well in the 2019 city championship against the Condors on Oct. 30.
Eli Woldringh was named North Central Zone MVP, while team captain Ethan Costley and Jared Ebert we’re given all-star honours.
College Heights will have the week off to practice before heading south to Langley for the B.C. Boys AA Volleyball Championships from Nov. 27 to 30.
They go into the tournament ranked fifth in the province, while Duchess Park will join them in Langley as the 10th seed.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners came running back in their gold medal match.
After losing the opening set 25-14 to the D.P. Todd Trojans, Kelly Road surged back to win three consecutive sets in the best-of-five final 25-21, 25-16 and 25-19.
They hope to gain some ground this year after finishing 13th at the 2018 B.C. championships and, as of Nov. 8, were not provincially-ranked going into the weekend.
The B.C. Girls AA Volleyball Championships are in Vernon this year, also from Nov. 27 to 30.
