Construction of the new entrance at the Prince George Public Library is about to get underway.

The City of Prince George has announced construction will start early next week involving the installation of a two-and-a-half storey addition to the north side of the library and also a new circulation area.

The project will be done by local companies as both the architect (Cehoff Thompson, Architects North) and construction company (Datoff Bros. Construction) are both based in Prince George.

The site is currently being mobilized and prepared ahead of the construction.

As of today (May 29), library-goers will have to rely on the parking-level entrance to gain access to the library.

The work will also cause a partial closure to one of the traffic lanes on a section of Canada Games Way in front of the library, while the closure of both lanes will be needed from time-to-time during the course of construction.

The city says the project is currently set to be finished and opened to the public by the spring of 2020.

Project features are:

  • An elevator with access from both sides providing access from the parking area, plaza level, main floor, and second floor
  • Improved stairs for access from the main lobby to the second floor
  • Windows to maximize natural light and an open atmosphere
  • All entries will be accessible through sliding glass or push button access
  • Enhanced accessible parking and drop off zone at parking level

The city also released 2018 statistics on library numbers:

  • Days open per year – 328 (the Library is closed on Sundays from May to September)
  • New patron registrations – 3,573
  • Total patrons – 58,188
  • Number of items in the collection – 174,071
  • Website/catalogue visits – 368,718
  • Library visits – 309,145 (943 people each day of operation)
  • Items loaned – 817,385 (2,239 per day, including closed days)
