Don Fitzpatrick is looking to bring a combination of business sense and social responsibility to city council in October.
Fitzpatrick announced his candidacy for the Oct. 15 local election on Facebook earlier this month. He is an alumni of the College of New Caledonia’s business program and works in sales, but is also a long-time volunteer with organizations including the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Prince George Humane Society.
“I’ve been in Prince George since 1991. I’ve seen Prince George through all its ups and its downs,” he said. “(My) goal is to bring more transparency and inclusivity to city council. There has to be more engagement with the community.”
Government overspending, homelessness and crime are the top three issues facing Prince George city council, he said.
“My top priority is to look into the overspending,” he said.
Homelessness is a community-wide issue, Fitizpatrick added, and addressing it will help reduce the crime which has concerned residents and downtown businesses.
He said he hopes to be a voice for Indigenous residents on city council as well.
“My wife and children are aboriginal,” Fitzpatrick said. “We don’t have that representation on city council.”
Fitzpatrick has hosted a number of live question and answer sessions on his campaign Facebook page, Elect Don Fitzpatrick 2022, and urged residents to contact him there if they have any questions or comments for him. He said as the campaign progresses, he hopes to engage with voters on Twitter and Instagram as well.
