Counterattack campaign disappointing

Halfway through the counterattack campaign, RCMP say the number of immediate road prohibitions (IRP) and excessive speeding tickets are way too high.

"It seems that some drivers are still not getting the message that if they drink, they need to find a safe way home," said RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung

During the first 15-day half of the month-long campaign, police across the province have encountered: 167 impaired drivers who were criminally charged; 264 drivers who received a three -day IRP included 139 drivers who had their vehicles impounded for three days.

Three drivers received a seven-day IRP , including two who had vehicles impounded for seven days; 536 drivers receiving a 90-day IRP all faced a mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment.

A total of 118 drivers were charged with excessive speed, with 117 drivers having vehicles impounded for seven days and one driver having the vehicle impounded for 30 days.

"We will use every enforcement tool that is available to us to make the biggest impact," Chung said.

"Our goal is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roadways. It is unacceptable to have an average of 133 people killed every year because of drunk driving," said Chung of "E" Division Traffic Services.

"If you continue to drive under the influence; prepare to lose your licence, to have your vehicle impounded, to pay hefty fines, and to possibly face criminal charges.

"If you don't wear your seatbelts, drive dangerously, or drive impaired; you will have to face the consequences. We will continue to step up our enforcement efforts throughout the holiday season and into the new year," Chung said.
