PHOTOS: Evacuation Alert issued to Farrell Street residences due to significant flooding risk

Homes could start flooding if the Fraser River reaches 9.8 metres

The City of Prince George has issued an Evacuation Alert for those living on Farrell Street, across from Paddlewheel Park, due to 'significant' risk of flooding from the nearby Fraser River.

The BC River Forecast Centre is currently predicting the river level in the South Fort George area could reach between 9.5 and 9.8 metres this weekend. An official flood watch remains in place.

As of this publication (July 4), the river is currently at roughly 9.4 metres. Homes on Farrell Street could see flooding once the river hits around 9.8 metres.

"Recent heavy rainfall in the Fraser River Basin has caused the River to rise significantly, which now poses a danger of flooding to residences of Farrell Street as well as Paddlewheel and Hazelton Parks," a release from the city says.

"Members of Prince George Fire Rescue are currently hand-delivering evacuation alert notices to homes on Farrell Street. Sand and sandbags are available to the residents of Farrell Street and are positioned at the north end of the street."

The city adds Cottonwood Island Park and the Heritage River Trail from the Cameron Street Bridge to Taylor Drive remain closed due to rising river levels. Barricades are at parking lot entrances to warn motorists of the closures and warning signs have also been installed at various sites in the park.

"The City of Prince George issues evacuation alerts to notify residents of a risk to their property and their personal well-being that may also prevent emergency vehicles from accessing their property," the release states. "Should the City issue an evacuation order, residences under alert must be evacuated immediately."

Those under alerts are strongly advised to have emergency kits ready to help them leave quickly if properties move to an Evacuation Alert.
