Explosives found in vehicle

Prince George RCMP discovered four pipe bombs containing explosive materials Sunday evening in vehicle on Ospika Boulevard.

Prince George RCMP discovered four pipe bombs containing explosive materials Sunday evening in vehicle on Ospika Boulevard.

The boulevard and surrounding area was secured from both directions and two Prince George men, aged 23 and 33, were taken into custody.

On Monday morning members of the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit in Vancouver flew to Prince George to deal with the explosives which they disposed of safely in gravel pit, said Cst. Gary Godwin.

The discovery was made about 7:20 p.m. when two young RCMP members stopped a vehicle for speeding and observed stolen goods from an earlier break & enter incident. A search of the vehicle turned up the four pipe bombs.

"It was excellent police work by these two young members," said Godwin.

The two offenders are known to police, but the matter does not appear to be gang related, Godwin said.

Investigation is continuing, and charges of possession of stolen property and possession of burglary instruments are being contemplated.

No further details are known at this time as to the intended use of the pipe bombs or charges relating to the explosives.

It was around 7:20 p.m. Sunday when police stopped a vehicle on Ospika Boulevard for a traffic violation. Members spotted possible stolen goods from an earlier break-and-enter, and upon searching the vehicle, a possible explosive device was found. Two men were taken into custody and the boulevard was curtained off in both directions.
