A fire that broke out inside a single-storey commercial building in the 1000 block of Pickering Road on Thursday evening caused more than $400,000 damage, Prince George Fire Rescue said.

Called to the scene near Prince George Regional Correctional Centre at about 6:15 p.m., crews arrived to find heavy black smoke and flames coming from the building and remained on the scene for several hours extinguishing the fire and related hot spots.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire.

"The fire is currently being investigated by Prince George Fire Rescue personnel," assistant fire chief Darrell Koschinsky said in a statement issued early Friday morning. "Fire investigators will be on scene later this morning to start their investigation."

Reports say the building may have housed an impromptu skateboard park.

A commercial real estate website lists a 21.265 acre parcel of land with two metal-clad buildings for sale on 1021 Pickering Road. It describes the buildings as two shops - one 4,900 square feet and the other 1,600 square feet. The listing says the sale of the property is subject to court approval.

The asking price for the property was $654,000.
