A Prince George man's request to receive federal time for his crimes was granted Wednesday in Prince George provincial court.
Ian Vernon Cooper, 26, was sentenced to two years plus a day with no credit for time already served in custody for his role in a firearms theft and a confrontation with police.
Cooper pleaded guilty to four theft and firearms charges. He told the court prior to sentencing that he wanted federal time to take advantage of the programs for substance abuse in that system.
Cooper and Keith Christopher Lundy, 33, were arrested Oct. 6, 2011 when police were called to the West Lake area to investigate a theft of firearms.
Police set up a roadblock to stop the pickup truck Lundy was driving after he refused to pull over.
When they reached the roadblock, Lundy rammed a cruiser and continued on to Highway 16 where he and Cooper abandoned the vehicle near Haldi Road and ran into the bush before they were apprehended.
Cooper was sentenced to two years plus a day for possession of a weapon obtained through an offence and concurrent terms of six months for occupying a vehicle in which there is a firearm, knowingly possessing a firearm without a licence, as well as a concurrent four months for possession of stolen property under $5,000.
Cooper, who also said he takes full responsibility for his actions, was also issued a 10-year firearms prohibition.
Earlier this month, Lundy was sentenced to two years in jail and three years probation for flight from a peace officer and assault with a weapon and to one year in jail for two counts of possession of a weapon obtained through crime, occupying a vehicle with a firearm and knowingly possessing a firearm without a licence.
