The second installment of Tourism Prince George’s Local Legend Series features a Prince George resident and former Olympian.

Tourism Prince George is telling the stories of local legends and places in a new video series, which have been beautifully produced by local company 6ixsigma.

Tony Fiala is a biathlete who competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.

In the video, Fiala explains the history and importance of Otway and the Caledonia Nodic Ski Club to Prince George.

He says "Otway is a home for myself and my family and it has grown into a World Class facility that supports athletes and programs and hosts many provincial, national and international events.”

He explains that for decades people had been skiing in and around the city, which hosted several compitions between 1966 and 1981 but there was a demand for Nordic Skiing a little closer to home.

The answer was Otway and the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club.

The facility opened for the 1984-85 season and at the time boasted 4km of trails, a two story cabin, a biathalong range and 250 members.

“Now Otway is bigger and better than ever,” said Fiala in the video.

Otway now has 60 km of ski and dog trails, 15 kilomoteres of snowshoe trails, thousands of members and hundreds of drop-ins.

“Everyone from seniors to families to students, some veterans and some trying things out for the first time, and everything in between,” said Fiala.
