Hannah Loukes taking flight from Prince George to Edmonton for university basketball

When Hannah Loukes takes the court, she displays the roar and strength of a lion with the grace and finesse of an eagle.

Put the two together and you get a griffin, a powerful, legendary mythological creature that bears traits and features from both animals.

The analogy may be that of destiny for Loukes as she’s officially committed to playing for the MacEwan University Griffins’ women’s basketball team for the 2020-21 Canada West season.

The Prince George product graduated from Duchess Park Secondary this year after winning three straight city championships with the Condors, including a 15-point performance as a senior in the 2020 final.

She tells PrinceGeorgeMatters the game runs in the family and is excited to follow in her father’s footsteps for university basketball.

“I have always had the dream of being able to play post secondary basketball, especially looking up to my dad who played basketball at UVic and having the opportunity to do so, I’m very thankful for that,” the 18-year-old said. 

“In my rookie season, I hope to accomplish growing my basketball IQ as well as learning from all my teammates, who have already been playing at the U-Sports level to help me improve as a player.”

Loukes was a consistent scoring machine for Duchess Park at 2020 provincials, combining for a team-high 54 points at the tournament in Langley.

This included a team-high 15 points in her final high school basketball game, which was a close 63-57 loss to Valleyview for eighth place in B.C. senior girls’ AAA play.

This past season, the MacEwan Lady Griffins finished 16th in Canada West with a 2-18 record.

Loukes says she’ll enroll in the Edmonton school’s Bachelor of Arts program, but has potential plans to pursue communications in hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster.
