According to Environment Canada’s forecast, Prince George and its surrounding regions could see up to, or more than, 20 cm of snowfall between today (Jan. 10) and tomorrow night (Jan. 11).

The prediction has prompted the city to remain vigilant and summon its snow crews to work through the weekend day and night to clear roads and sidewalks.

As per Prince George’s Snow and Ice Control Policy, if 20 cm of snow falls in a 24-hour period, a Heavy Snowfall Declaration will be put in place, which lets local residents know that crews and staff will take longer to reach certain roads during the clearing process.

Priority One and Two routes will take precedences, such as the hospital district, bus routes, the main arteries and priority hills.

Priority Three routes and residential roads will likely be tended to in the extended time period should the city declare a Heavy Snowfall Declaration.

Additionally, for every extra eight centimetres that falls during a declaration, anothr 24 hours will be added to the snow-clearing schedule.

“Multiple factors, including temperatures, accompanying weather systems, and total snow accumulation affect operations, timelines, and decisions about equipment deployment,” reads a statement from the City of Prince George.

“Consequently, motorists who intend to visit the downtown during the evenings this weekend are reminded that on-street parking is prohibited from midnight to 7 a.m. per the City’s winter parking restrictions, which are intended to assist snow and ice control operations.”

The City adds all illegally parked vehicles could get a $50 ticket or risk getting towed if they don’t comply with the parking restrictions during its operations.
