Under that dusting of snow that fell on the city overnight lurks a demon.
Our Prince George streets, sidewalks and driveways are covered in ice, the result of a daylong downpour in early January that saw compacted snow freeze over.
As anyone who has taken a fall on those slippery surfaces would attest, this is a deadly time of year that is no doubt resulting in a spike of injuries.
Canada Post is urging people to do what they can to mitigate the danger for postal delivery drivers and other people who use sidewalks and driveways of private and commercial properties to get to your door.
“We know that Prince George is currently experiencing severe weather conditions, which is why we’re asking for your help to spread this message,” said Canada Post spokesperson Lisa Liu.
“Our delivery agents are doing their best to deliver through difficult weather conditions. Winter elements pose a safety risk to our employees – and others. That is why we’re reminding homeowners and businesses to help us deliver letters and parcels safely by keeping a clear and safe path to their home or business. With everyone’s support, we can help avoid an injury that can happen in just seconds.”
Liu has a few suggestions for homeowners and business operators that will help make their jobs easier and safer.
- Remove snow and ice from your walkways, driveway and around your mailbox.
- De-ice stairs, entranceways and the pathways to mailboxes, using sand or salt.
- Keep stairs, handrails and mailboxes free of obstructions and in good repair.
- Turn on outdoor lights to keep pathways and stairs visible.
