An Ontario court ruling means all but six Canadian locations of The Bay will begin liquidating stock on Monday, March 24.
This includes the Prince George location at Parkwood Place.
The Canadian Press reported Friday, March 21 that the six stores that won't be part of the liquidation include the flagship downtown Toronto location as well as stores at Yorkdale Mall in Toronto, Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill, Ont. and Quebec locations in Montreal, Laval and Pointe-Claire.
Those stores are performing well enough that they can generate revenue to repay interim financing the company has in place.
The Hudson's Bay company, founded more than 350 years ago as a fur-trading enterprise, has been a retail staple of the country for decades. Its 80 locations included small-town department stores and upscale locations in larger centres, as well as three Saks Fifth Avenue stores.
The company, which entered bankruptcy protection earlier this year, cites declining sales in a changing retail environment as a major factor in the decision to wind down operations.
The changes affect more than 9,000 employees.
