A 27-year-old man known to Prince George RCMP was arrested and charged last week after he was found with stolen mail from a local apartment building.
Jordan Lalonde has been approved of charges as police investigated mail theft from a Union Street complex, located in the Spruceland area, after he was arrested in the early hours of March 16.
On that date around 2 a.m., officers were investigating a different matter on Central Street West when they saw a man familiar to them standing in the middle of the road.
Spokesperson Cst. Jennifer Cooper explains Mounties asked Lalonde to show them what was in his pockets out of respect for safety.
Police discovered the suspect had several pieces of mail and one piece of identification on him that were not in his name,
she said.
The mail belongs to several different people who reside in an apartment building on Union Street that recently reported a mail theft. The identification belongs to a Prince George resident who reported their wallet stolen in April [2020].
Cooper adds Lalonde as held at the detachment before he made his first court appearance that same morning.
The B.C. Prosecution Service has since approved the following charges:
- Possession of stolen property under $5,000
- Failing to comply with probation order
Police say Lalonde is back in the community, but on a release order until his court appearance in April.
This is the second mail theft reported by Prince George RCMP in the last two weeks.
On March 10, police were called by a witness who claimed they saw two people get into a taxicab after they reportedly stole mail from a 15th Avenue apartment building.
Police found the vehicle nearby with one of the suspects still inside and were arrested, while the other was located down the street.
A search of their belongings found several different types of keys on a large key ring.
This case is still being investigated, as of this publication (March 22).
