More than 100 COVID-19 cases in three days for Northern Health, 11 new deaths in B.C.

Northern Health is back in triple digits when it comes to a high number of COVID-19 cases found in a single weekend.

Today (March 8), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 102 infections from the regional authority since Friday (March 5) out of 1,462 across B.C.

Northern Health's new accumulated total has surpassed 4,900 since March 14, 2020, while the province's grand total sits at 84,569.

Though none were out of the north, 11 more people sadly died from the virus in B.C., raising the toll to 1,391.

Henry says there are currently 4,054 active COVID-19 cases, with 240 people admitted into hospital and 66 in critical care or ICU.

More than 8,700 people are listed under active public health monitoring after coming into contact with someone who recently tested positive for the virus, along with 78,237 recoveries.

The latest three-day case counts are as follows:

• 545 = Friday to Saturday
• 532 = Saturday to Sunday
• 385 = Sunday to Monday

Henry also says there are 144 new variant-of-concern cases, bringing the total to 394 in B.C., but none have been detected in Northern Health.

This includes 363 infections related to the B.1.1.7 variant, originating in the U.K., along with 87 active cases.

Today, Northern Health experienced high call volumes as Phase Two in B.C.'s COVID-19 immunization plan began with residents booking appointments for vaccinations.

Seniors aged 90 and over and Indigenous elders aged 65 and over are currently eligible to make that call, but it appeared B.C., as a whole, did not understand as 1.7 million calls came in the first three hours when the lines opened at 7 a.m.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said there are only about 47,000 people in the province who are over 90 and about 35,000 who are Indigenous people over 65. A number of people in those groups have already received a shot in care homes, he added.

"I very much appreciate the enthusiasm of everybody calling in. But I would ask that people allow those who are eligible this week to book appointments," he said.

"That is a massive number of phone calls. If that were to continue, obviously no phone system would respond to that."

Northern Health is set to open more than 30 vaccine clinic locations across the region, including the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre.

The call centre (1-844-255-7555) will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Seniors aged 80 years and above can call to book an appointment starting Wednesday (March 10).

Northern Health's school-exposure section also explains the following:

• Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
• We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
• Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
  • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
• Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
