New contract ratified for Northern B.C. firefighters

Fort St. John firefighters will enjoy a wage increase for 2022, 2023, and 2024, thanks to a new union agreement.

A new three-year agreement has been ratified between the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 2143 and the City of Fort St. John, announced the city on social media.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to all the members of the negotiating team for providing the necessary leadership and support throughout this process. The resulting agreement not only benefits IAFF Local 2143, but also ensures that our community can continue to thrive,” shared Matt Crompton, President of IAFF Local 2143.

The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, 2021, and negotiations had been ongoing, reads the release. The new agreement means a wage increase of 3.5 percent for 2022 and 4.5 percent for both 2023 and 2024 years, in addition to several other housekeeping changes.

“Council is happy that an agreement has been reached with our local fire fighters that recognizes the tremendous work they do to ensure the safety of our residents, businesses, and visitors,” said Mayor Lilia Hansen.
