Prince George Fire Rescue crews battle burning debris at Moccasin Flats

Only a handful of people still live in the now-largely-deserted encampment

City fire crews were called to Moccasin Flats shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday to deal with a pile of burning debris.

Smoke filled the air before firefighters soon got it under control.

The fire broke out in a largely deserted section of what was once a crowded encampment. Only a handful of people still live in the more easterly section. Most of the shelters and trailers in the western half of the Flats have caught fire or been removed over the past year.

A cleanup got under way earlier this week but there's still a lot of debris, including parts of rough shelters and discarded possessions, scattered around.
