Remember the name, Michael Svenson!
With the B.C. Division set to begin its 2020-21 WHL season in three weeks, the Prince George Cougars are bringing the young go-getter from Mantioba.
Svenson joined the Cats this week on a standard player agreement, making him the sixth draft pick from 2018 to sign with the northern-capital club.
According to Scouting Director Bob Simmonds, the 17-year-old is set to bring in a wealth of talent and experience to help round out Prince George’s offense.
“Svenson is a young, physical and determined player and he will help make our team harder to play against,” he explained.
“He also has the ability to provide us depth scoring and he’s a welcome addition to our young core of players.”
Svenson joins Craig Armstrong, Tyler Brennan, Blake Eastman, Ethan Samson and Hudson Thornton in a Cougars sweater from the same draft class three years ago.
He was taken in the fifth round, 104th overall.
A WHL standard agreement entitles a player to a university scholarship after their major junior career is over, as well as medical and dental insurance coverage, hockey equipment and billets.
Prior to hockey’s pause across the country by COVID-19, the right-handed forward registered six points, including four goals, in eight games with the Winkler Flyers in the Manitoba Junior ‘A’ Hockey League (MJHL).
In 2019-20, Svenson led the Eastman Under-18 AAA Selects on the scoresheet with 54 points in 47 regular-season games, broken down among 29 goals and 25 assists.
Prince George’s shortened new season starts March 26 in a 24-game, dual hub-city format in Kamloops and Kelowna.
A schedule has yet to be released.
