Three was the magic number for the Prince George Spruce Kings last night (Nov. 16) and throughout this week at home.
They won by three goals in a 5-2 final score with Nick Poisson earning three points Saturday at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA), including two goals.
Prince George led all three periods in shot on goal, totalling 31 against West Kelowna, and it was the end of a three-game homestand, managing three points in the 1-1-0-1 week.
Jett Alexander started in all three contests on home ice, making 20 saves on 22 shots from the Warriors for his ninth victory of 2019-20.
He also stopped a penalty shot at the 17:55 mark of the opening period.
The three ‘Ns’ went to work in getting the Spruce Kings’ first goal of the night.
Nick Bochen scored his first of the season while on a power-play with 51 seconds left in the first period, assisted by [Nick] Poisson and captain Nolan Welsh.
That would be the only marker for Prince George on three man-advantages against West Kelowna (1/3).
The Warriors countered just over 13 minutes into the second for a 1-1 tie, but the Spruce Kings would answer with two goals in 54 seconds later on.
Ryan McAllister’s fourth of the year and Poisson’s first of the game got the home team to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play, with assists credited to Tom Richter, Mason Waite and Bochen.
West Kelowna made it 3-2 in the latter half of the final frame to keep themselves in play at the RMCA.
However, the ‘Kings would pull away lighting two more lamps within a minute of each other.
Poisson’s second of the night at 16:23 was his team-leading ninth of the year.
Carter Cochrane finally broke through to score his first BCHL goal 43 seconds later and seal the 5-2 victory over the Warriors.
Prince George earned its first win in five games, upping their Mainland Division record to 9-12-2-3.
Residents and fans won’t see the Spruce Kings until Sunday, Dec. 1 as they embark on a five-game road trip through the Island and Interior Divisions.
They begin on Tuesday (Nov. 19) in Alberni Valley and Wednesday (Nov. 20) in Nanaimo.
