There’s a new king of the castle ready to lead Prince George to what will hopefully be another long memorable season.
Nolan Welsh has been selected by Head Coach Alex Evin and the Spruce Kings management team to be the captain for 2019-20 after stepping up in a big way during the playoff run to the Fred Page and Doyle Cups last season.
The 20-year-old from Whistler is playing his fourth and final season in the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL), his third in the northern capital after being traded in August 2017 from Victoria.
He averaged nearly a point-per-game in the BCHL postseason, recording 16 points in 17 games (five goals, 12 assists), and notched 20 in 43 games in the regular season.
En route to the Doyle Cup, he lit two lamps and added an assist for three points in those six games against the Brooks Bandits.
Welsh also scored twice in the six games Prince George played in the 2019 National Junior ‘A’ Championship, including one in the gold medal game.
He’ll have the ‘C’ stitched onto his sweater while two of his teammates will get an ‘A.’
Chong Min Lee and Nick Poisson have received that honour.
The Spruce Kings’ season opener is on home ice at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) tomorrow night (Sept. 6), 7 p.m. against the Surrey Eagles.
Prior to puck-drop, Prince George will watch banners raised to the rafters in honour of their historic season.
