An investigation is ongoing near Quesnel after human remains were found just outside the city.
The BC RCMP North District Major Crime Unit, alongside the BC Coroners Service and Quesnel RCMP, are working on identifying the remains discovered on Wednesday (May 6).
In a release, spokesperson S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says human remains were found in a rural area roughly 40 km west of Quesnel near the Nazko Highway by a member of the Police Dog Section from Prince George.
Shoihet says police were following up on information related to Louis Korkowski, a local man who had been reported missing and possibly abducted on the evening of May 4.
The investigation will now be taken over by the North District Major Crime Unit as initial indicators show that the remains, as well as circumstances of the death, involve criminal nature.
We are working to determine identity and the BC Coroners Service is also investigating,
Shoihet says in a statement.
We recognize there are many questions and wishes for us to confirm whether or not these are the remains of the man, recently reported missing to the Quesnel RCMP. Our priority at this time is to confirm identity and then to speak with the man’s family
"Extensive resources are being devoted to this investigation to ensure public safety," added Operations Officer of the BC RCMP Major Crime Section Supt. Sanjaya Wijayakoom added in the release.
Investigators are seeking any information leading up to this man’s death and are asking witnesses to call the Quesnel RCMP Detachment at 250-992-9211 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
