Rumours circulating on social media that wildfires are threatening BC Hydro transmission or telecommunications lines in northern B.C. are not true, according to a statement released on Friday by the BC Wildfire Service.
Posts circulating on social media suggested that communities west of wildfires near Burns Lake could lose power or phone/internet access as early as Friday evening.
"BC Wildfire Service is aware of information circulating about threats to critical infrastructure due to wildfires in the northwest. We can confirm that there is no imminent risk to BC Hydro or CityWest/Telus infrastructure at this time," a BC Wildfire Service spokesperson said in an email. "We are actively monitoring infrastructure sites and are in close communication with local partners. As always, there are risks associated with wildfires but we can assure the public that there is no imminent threat at this time."
