Northern Health COVID-19 death toll rises to 48 as cases move upwards

Cases, hospitalizations and fatalities continue to rise in northern B.C.

The death toll rose to 48 yesterday (Jan. 15) after another death was recorded. 

In a written statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced an additional 509 cases discovered throughout the province. 

Of those new cases, the northern B.C. region added 49 new cases out of 342 tests which equates to a positive return rate of 14 per cent. 

As of this publication (Jan. 16), there are 497 active cases in the region with 44 hospitalized, 13 of which are currently in critical care. 

As of Thursday (Jan. 14), Northern Health's seven-day rolling average for positivity rate is 15.2 per cent, the highest in the province. B.C. as a whole has a positivity rate of 6.2 per the latest data update. 

The latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Health Service Delivery Area of Case Residence data released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) yesterday shows the northwestern region recorded 146 cases from Jan. 8 to 14, 2021, the largest count. 

The northern interior, which includes Prince George, recorded the second-highest count with 132 while northeast B.C. saw 69 over the six-day period. 

From Jan. 1, 2020 to Jan. 14, 2021, the northern interior has seen 1,374 cases while the northwest has recorded 713 and the northeast currently sits at 651. 

There are 4,604 active cases throughout the province with 349 hospitalized and 68 in ICU with 1,047 fatalities.
