A new partnership within the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) has the Prince George Spruce Kings hitting the pavement on Highway 16 west.
The reigning Fred Page and Doyle Cup champions will be part of a new league event that will take two teams on the road to showcase Junior ‘A’ hockey in a non-BCHL community, pinning them against the Langley Rivermen at Tamitik Arena in Kitimat in regular season play.
The LNG Canada BCHL Road Show takes place Feb. 15 and 16, 2020, which follows a day of hockey clinic and autograph sessions with Vancouver Canucks alumni (Feb. 14).
“We are extremely excited to bring BCHL hockey to the community of Kitimat,” said Commissioner Chris Hebb in a news release. “This event is a great way for us to showcase our BCHL talent outside of our 17 local markets and reach hockey fans that might not be able to attend our games.”
The District of Kitimat has a top-level hockey team, the Ice Demons, who play in the five-team Central Interior AA Senior Men’s Hockey League (CIHL) in addition to its local minor association.
The northwest B.C. community also takes pride in Justin Almeida, a former Prince George and Cariboo Cougar, who was born there and signed an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this year.
The Spruce Kings will be the designated visitors on Feb. 15 with a 7 p.m. puck-drop, and will take the home side in the second of the double-header on Feb. 16, which will have a 1 p.m. game time.
