If you see smoke in the sky west of Prince George, don’t be alarmed as the BC Wildfire Service and BC Timber sales are planning pile burns.

Both will be burning about 100 piles of wood debris along West Lake Estates Road starting Wednesday (Oct. 21) and continuing periodically until spring 2021.

West Lake Estates Road is about 25 km southwest of Prince George, along the western shore of West Lake, and smoke may be visible from the city and its surrounding areas.

The BC Wildfire Service says the decision on when to start burning will depend on weather and site conditions as such burns are only conducted when conditions are suitable.

The provincal service and BC Timber Sales personnel will be on-site to control and monitor the fires, and all burning activities will also adhere to the Open Burning and Smoke Control Regulation to limit the impact on air quality in nearby communities.

These piles are the result of logging activities and consist of unsalvageable wood debris.

BC Wildfire Service says burning this material will help decrease the risk of future wildfires in the area by reducing accumulations of surface fuels.
