Parents, coaches, and fans witnessed the largest field of gymnasts ever to compete in Prince George’s history.
The local Gymnastics Club hosted its annual Invitational meet as well as the Zone Eight Championships at its Exhibition Park facility this past weekend, with over 300 athletes putting their skills to the test against the best young performers from the northern B.C. region.
The levels of difficulty ranged from Junior Olympic (J.O.) One through 10 among women and men.
For the Prince George team, the home gym proved to be a strong asset as they landed 14 all-around gold medals from the three-day challenge.
This includes Alencia Graham (pictured first in photo gallery), who won the all-around Zone Eight Regional Championship title.
The winners of the remaining baker’s dozen medals in all-around competition are as follows:
- Sadie Bricker (J.O. Eight)
- Mary Grace Maurice (J.O. Six)
- Morgan Mclachlan (J.O. Six)
- Hannah Robinson (J.O. Six)
- Sophia Schwab (J.O. Five)
- Aimee Fournier (J.O. Four) = Two gold
- Saige Lupul (J.O. Four) = Two gold
- Kenlee Coleman (J.O. Three)
- Arianna Vukovic (J.O. Three) = Two gold
- James Clendenning (Men Level Three)
Prince George phenom Alia Wilson was also at her host meet as the only competitor in the J.O. 10 category.
She will be heading to Ottawa later this month to the 2019 Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships beginning on May 21.
The 16-year-old won two silvers at Westerns in Saskatoon at the end of April.
The other northern clubs in Prince George this weekend included the Quesnel Technics, Cariboo-Chilcotin, Milezero (Dawson Creek), North Peace (Fort St. John), Smithers Saltos, Kitimat Dynamics, and Terrace Peaks.
Prince George Gymnastics Club will travel to the Lower Mainland once again for their next competition, the TAG Cup Invitational in Port Coquitlam, taking place this weekend on May 11 and 12.
