An RCMP officer charged with assault was found not guilty last week in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court.
In Sept. 2006, Cst. Ed Fox was one of two officers attending a residence in Maple Ridge to keep the peace while a woman removed her personal belongings due to ongoing domestic issues. The male involved in the relationship returned to the residence and allegedly began causing a disturbance. He was arrested, and as a result of this arrest an allegation of excessive force was made six to eight months later by the male. An internal investigation was held, resulting in an assault charge against Fox.
On Sept. 30 Fox was found not guilty of assault. The judge stated that he used no more force than was necessary to subdue the man while taking him into custody and that he was justified in escalating the force he applied.
