A Prince George teenager will play basketball on an international stage next year, representing not only her province, but her cultural background as well.
Aliah Turner has been selected to play for one of Team B.C.’s basketball squads at the 2020 North American Indigenous Games.
Turner made the under-14 girls’ roster as announced today (Dec. 4) by the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (ISPARC).
She will be one of 12 ballers to battle on the court in Halifax against other provinces, regions and First Nations territories at the 11th edition of the multi-sport competition.
“It becomes really helpful in a situation like this where we have a short tournament and might not get to play together much before then,” said Head Coach Montanna Howe in a news release.
“Some of these kids have played at the Junior All-Native or other tournaments together and they all have great attitudes, which is a very important thing when you don’t see each other all the time.”
Turner attended ISPARC’s try-out camp in late September when coaches and certified instructors came to Prince George for two days of practice drills and skill development sessions.
After an impressive outing, the 13-year-old was invited to Team B.C.’s selection camp in Richmond last month for the final cuts.
She’ll suit up in B.C. blue and gold at the games in Nova Scotia from Aug. 12-18, 2020.
