A third regional camp in hopes of finding local athletes for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games is coming to Prince George this month.
Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreation Council (ISPARC) of B.C. is seeking youth First Nation basketball players from across the province to take the court in Halifax next July and the northern capital is one of four stops.
John McInnis Junior Secondary School will host the two-day camp for boys and girls in three different age groups:
- Under-19s (Born 2001 or later)
- Under-16s (Born 2004 or later)
- Under-14s (Born 2006 or 2007)
Registered players will go through a two-and-a-half-hour session that includes drills and skills assessment, all evaluated by certified instructors.
Once the camp is complete, some players will be invited to the provincial try-outs in Richmond in November for the final Team B.C. selection event.
The Prince George camp will take place Sept. 28 and 29, but this is subject to change to a one-day affair if registration is on the lower side.
In addition to a $20 camp fee, there are some requirements that must be met including proof of a player’s native ancestry, such as First Nations, Inuit, or Metis.
More information is available on ISPARC’s website.
Earlier this year, Indigenous Games soccer and softball camps were also hosted in Prince George.
