Prince George coach brings American team north for Cariboo Cougars exhibition series

As hockey season begins to creep back for the Prince George Cougars and Spruce Kings, so does the pre-season festivities for the city’s top midget hockey program.

Starting today (Aug. 28), the Cariboo Cougars are hosting its exhibition camp over the Labour Day long weekend, welcoming a local product and Stanley Cup champion back to his hometown with his current team.

Turner Stevenson, born in Mackenzie and raised in Prince George, is the head coach of the Everett Silvertips’ junior team and has brought back his program to B.C.’s northern capital for a third year to practice, train, and face-off against the Cariboo Cougars.

The 47-year-old took over Everett’s hockey operations in 2016; the program plays in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL).

He has spent the majority of his life state-side since his trade from Montreal to New Jersey in 2000, where he won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003.

Stevenson will be splitting the players he’s brought to Prince George into three teams, in which the Cariboo Cougars and two other clubs under the new six-team umbrella will play against in a friendly exhibition series.

Games will begin Friday afternoon (Aug. 30) and all will be played at the Elksentre at 4833 Heather Rd.
