What better way to start 2020 than competing in a national championship?

That’s exactly what a pair of Prince George judokas got to do this past weekend in Montreal at the 2020 Canadian Elite Championships.

With B.C.’s badge on their uniforms, Kimiko Kamstra and Tami Goto represented the Hart Judo Academy and Prince George Judo Club respectively at the three-day event in Canada’s second-largest city.

Kamstra fought her way to a podium placement, earning a bronze medal in the -48kg weight class and was one of six B.C. female judo athletes to bring home some hardware.

She fought Alberta’s Evelyn Beaton in the third-place match and lost, but as per international judo rules, both third-place bout competitors will receive a medal.

In the -52kg division, Goto finished in sixth and was the only B.C. athlete in her category.

She competed in her first-ever World Cadet Judo Championships in Kazakhstan back in September, one of four provincial athletes to wear the maple leaf at the event.
