The Prince George Aquatic Centre is officially two decades old.
For years, you might have heard the Aquatic Centre referred to as “the new pool” but now that it’s been 20 years since the Aquatic Centre first opened its doors, that phrase no longer rings true.
To celebrate the big day, the pool held a free pool party on Dec. 16 that included games, prizes, music, balloons and cake.
Mayor Lyn Hall, as well as Coun. Cori Ramsay and Coun. Kyle Sampson were on hand to cut the cake before it was distributed to the many hungry swimmers who attended the party.
The Aquatic Centre came to be after the 1993 General Elections when 77 per cent voted in favour of the city borrowing the fund necessary to build a second swimming pool in addition to the Four Seasons Leisure Pool.
Then on Dec. 18, 1998, the brand new Prince George Aquatic Centre opened its doors for the first time.
Now that it’s 20 years old, the facility has seen around five million visits.
The city estimates that 275,000 visitors per year use the Aquatic Centre for swimming clubs, lessons, or just to splash around.
The building is home to a 50-metre pool, a wave pool, diving boards and an on-site gym.
