Canada Post workers in Prince George are officially on strike, joining about 55,000 fellow employees across the country, after contract negotiations between the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the Crown corporation failed to reach an agreement by the Friday deadline.
Locally, CUPW workers were at picket lines at different Canada Post locations.
In a statement released Friday, Canada Post warned that the strike would have an immediate and widespread impact, particularly as it's happening during the runup to the holiday season.
With no new items being processed or accepted during the strike, all regular mail and parcel services are halted until an agreement is reached and operations resume, Canada Post states.
Some post offices remain open, but hours may vary.
While there is no clear end date, Canada Post warned that delivery delays could persist well beyond the conclusion of the strike, as it works to process a backlog of items once operations resume.
The City of Prince George issued a statement with advice for local residents on paying their bills.
