Each year, UNBC gathers to host a commemorative ceremony in honour of those who died in the Montreal Massacre on Dec. 6, 1989.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions and to meet safety guidelines, the Northern Women’s Centre in Prince George is set to recognize the 31st National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women virtually this year and hopes the community can join them.
On that horrific day, a man with a semi-automatic rifle walked into an engineering classroom at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, pulled out a gun, separated the men from the women and killed six women.
He later shot and killed eight more women and injured others for a total of 14 casualties.
A dozen of the female victims were engineering students, two were in nursing programs and one was a staff member.
It was the deadliest mass shooting in Canada’s history at that point.
UNBC’s free 90-minute online event is set to feature Sarah Boyd, Executive Director of the Northern Women’s Centre, a full list of speakers, dignitaries, volunteers and other community members.
It’ll also conclude Inspiring Women Among Us (IWAU) Week for 2020, whose theme this year was sharing power and diversifying leadership.
The Montreal Massacre virtual ceremony starts at 11 a.m. and those interested in viewing the day of recognition are encouraged to visit the IWAU website.
