Prince George's College Heights Secondary warned of third COVID-19 exposure event

For the first time since December, College Heights Secondary has been marked for a COVID-19 exposure event.

On Monday (March 15), the Prince George school was alerted by Northern Health a third time since classrooms returned in September.

Students and staff may have come into contact with someone who recently tested positive for the virus on March 8 and 9.

The authority says a self-monitoring period is in effect until March 22, 2021.

College Heights Secondary's previous exposures were Dec. 10 to 11 and Dec. 17 to 18; the monitoring periods ended on New Year's Day 2021.

It was also one of eight northern B.C. schools added to Northern Health's extensive list. The others were in the northwest region.

During the pandemic, 25 Prince George-based schools have been warned for a COVID-19 exposure event, which includes 22 School District 57 (SD57) members and three private institutions.

As of this publication (March 16), Northern Health has recorded 5,230 infections for the virus since March 14, 2020, including 111 deaths.

There are 344 active cases, 10 people admitted into critical care among 20 total hospitalizations, and 4,769 recoveries.

Northern Health's school-exposure section explains the following:

• Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
• We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
• Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
  • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
• Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
