The ice is finally ready and the Outdoor Ice Oval will be open for the skating season starting today (Dec. 23).

Today, and all Wednesdays, the oval will close at 6 p.m. for long blade speed skating practice. On all other days of the week, it will close at 8:30 p.m.

Organizers say the ice is still thin in places, so the oval may have to close again to build it up if ice is lost due to skating or weather.

This may be at short notice so please check the website and Facebook page to keep updated.

The situation with COVID-19 is dynamic and the Outdoor Oval Society is following Public Health orders and guidelines.

Skaters should pay attention to the safety information provided on site, and it is especially important that skaters keep to their immediate family groups with no social gatherings.

There will be additional picnic tables available this year for the skaters to put on or take off skates and shoes but the Canfor House will be closed this season.

Some additional COVID-19 safety rules to follow when using the oval include:

  1. Keep your distance from others
  2. Keep to your immediate family group
  3. One family per table for changing, and when done please move your personal belongings off the table
  4. Surfaces are not sanitized
  5. Wash/sanitize your hands before and after skating
  6. Wear a mask in common areas (when putting on skates) until you begin skating

The Prince George Outdoor Ice Oval is a 400-metre skating facility made with natural ice and maintained by the Outdoor Ice Oval Society of Prince George (OIOS of PG) with the support of the City of Prince George.

The oval is located behind the CN Centre and is ideal for both recreational skating and long-track speed skating.

You can access the oval with a $2 donation or $5 per family.
