High school grads around the country are refusing to let COVID-19 take away one of the biggest nights of their lives.
As proms are cancelled, a group of students have organized a virtual celebration of the end of high school with an event called #PromIsOn2020.
Prince George high school grads are invited to take part in the live-streamed event, which is being coordinated by a national prom committee made up of 36 student-leaders representing every province and territory.
During #PromIsOn2020, grads will show off their prom wear, dance to a live DJ set by Juno-winning artists Loud Luxury, and meet fellow students from across the country. Other special guests will also be announced soon.
“Most of my grad events (along with proms across Canada) have been cancelled due to COVID-19. Many of us are feeling lonely and disappointed right now. But we won’t let the virus take away this right of passage we have been looking forward to for so long,” says Kate Bourdon, a Grade 12 student from North Vancouver and one of the organizers of the event.
“During the live-streamed event on May 22, 2020, we’re going to show off our prom wear, dance to a live DJ set from Juno-winning duo Loud Luxury, hear shoutouts from Canadian role models, and meet fellow grads from across Canada. We’re celebrating our senior year together, apart.”
To make sure the night has a lasting impact on their peers, the students are working with Student Life Network, Canada’s largest online network of students, to raise money and mental health awareness for Kids Help Phone.
For every student that joins, a donation will be made.
“We hear daily from young people about the things they are worried about. Schools are closed, they aren’t able to see their friends or family and now, prom’s are cancelled. We are so excited to be a part of this initiative and want to thank Canada’s young people for being courageous and positive during these unprecedented times,” says Katherine Hay, CEO of Kids Help Phone.
Grads also can participate in the Prom Wave Challenge on Tik Tok using the hashtag #promison2020 for the promposal challenge on Instagram, and get dressed up and tune in to the livestream on May 22 where organizers will also be giving out prizes all night long.
